knitogether
Many parishes across the diocese have knitting ministries.  Women and men of all ages participate in creating items of warmth and blessings.  If you participate in a knitting ministry, send your story and pictures for posting on our website!  communications@ecwchicago.org

The ECW sponsors a quiet spot for knitting at Diocesan Convention.  Bring your project and meet other women who are also part of the knitting ministries of the diocese.

Since 1898, during the Spanish American War, volunteers of the Seamen’s Church Institute have knitted, collected, packed, and distributed gifts to mariners who are miles away from home during the holidays.  The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) serves the hardworking men and women laboring on the world’s oceans and inland rivers. With their work, these individuals fuel the global economy and make our way of life possible as they spend months at sea or on rivers away from their families, friends, and homes.

These knitting projects are for knitters (and crocheters) who have advanced skills.  Try challenging yourself with the patterns they include on their website!

Chaplain Micheal is busy sharing snacks, teddy bears, prayer shawls and cards with healthcare workers on the front lines at Stroger Hospital, Chicago.

Healing in Yarn

Bishop Anderson House provides spiritual care training to lay persons as well as caring for the spiritual needs of the patients, families and staff of Stroger Cook County Hospital and other Illinois Medical District hospitals. Chaplains serve people who are shaken by gun violence and severe traumatic injuries. The Teddy Bear Ministry shares cuddly bears with pediatric patients, but often adult patients or medical staff appreciate a Teddy Bear for comfort.

Prayer shawls have become a welcome part of Bishop Anderson’s outreach. The following is an article that they posted honoring the creators of these special care items.

She hurried up to the chaplain, asking if there were any more prayer shawls at the office; the medical unit stash was depleted. When the chaplain returned with an especially attractive shawl, the nurse threw up her arms excitedly, grabbed the shawl and wrapped it around her own shoulders.

A devoted cadre of knitters and crocheters create these beautiful symbols of caring and love for the patients, families and staff that chaplains Micheal and Rose visit at Stroger and Rush hospitals.

We are especially grateful to the following Prayer Shawl and Knitting Ministries for their donations:

  • Trinity Episcopal Church, Wheaton
  • Church of the Holy Nativity, Clarendon Hills
  • St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Wilmette
  • St. Paul & the Redeemer, Chicago
  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church, LaGrange
  • Church of the Holy Spirit, Lake Forest
  • St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Barrington

Our thanks to the women and men of these ministries for providing the healing gift of prayer shawls to Bishop Anderson House. If you or women in your parish are interested in donating prayer shawls or teddy bears, please contact Ann Ryba – Ann_G_Ryba@rush.edu
